I can’t even begin to tell you how many times oils have saved me – stress, indigestion, and even splinters! Yeah Mammas, you’re going to want this little secret! Before I get started I want to mention that in no way do oils replace proper medical attention for myself or my family. Natural remedies are great when used to support a healthy lifestyle but if something’s up, please seek advice from your doctor. Modern medicine can be a wonderful thing! Also this post is not sponsored by Young Living and all of the blends I use have been acquired from my oily friends as well as thorough Google searches ;).
At first this might seem overwhelming and a bit confusing. All of these different oils, blends, what to use when…? It goes on and on. I promise you though, the hardest part is taking the first step. Purchasing oils for the first time can be scary. They aren’t cheap and you might not even know if they will “work” for you. My favorite thing to do is gift my friends and family with oil blends that I use, that way they can try some of the ones I love and use most and see for themselves how helpful they can be. If you know someone who uses them the best thing to do is ask them! I can tell you first hand, people who use oils and love them also love to share their experience with oils and their benefits. Trust me, we LOVE it!
I was excited to see a lot of you inquire about using oils with kids! This is pretty much how I got hooked on oils in the first place! Sophie was a notorious non-sleeper, like until the age of six! That’s no joke… Anywho we were gifted a blend of oils said to help with sleep and relaxation. After two uses we were believers! I would say after one use but you know I had to be skeptical and blame the first night on coincidence. It couldn’t be that easy! But it was and I was thrilled! That doesn’t mean she’s slept every single night since then but we definitely don’t have sleep issues like before. We used that one oil for about a year and when we ran out I knew I needed to look into getting my own. To be honest, I was so confused with oils I put it off for months (maybe closer to a year) but really wanted to know more.
*Please note that when using oils on kids you should always dilute them with a carrier oil. Tons of safety info HERE!
When we moved to our new town and I got to know some of the other moms I was super excited to learn they were all into oils in one way or another! They were incredibly helpful and gave me the best tips for beginning as well as saving money! After chatting for a bit I wanted to get started right away. I decided to go with THIS starter kit and added Tea Tree and Oregano. The kit comes with the top 10 oils used and the two extra oils I purchased are used in a lot of other blends I wanted to make. The oils you get in the kit are smaller in size which gives you a chance to try them all to see what you like, and what you love! Also, you use some more than others so some of those smaller bottles will last a really long time! Once you get going you’ll notice which ones you use more and will need to reorder as well as some you want to add to your stash – when you research other blends you’ll start to add one oil here and there and before you know it you’ll be fully stocked! Purchasing one oil at a time doesn’t break the bank, so do it slowly and it won’t feel like so much. One other item I would highly suggest adding is Fractionated Coconut Oil. This is what I use to dilute any oils that you apply to the skin. You can find that HERE.
When your starter kit arrives you might want to dive right in and not know where to start, and that’s okay! I spent a lot of time googling different things I can use them for and realized quickly that there’s no right or wrong way to go about it. I would say the easiest (or less intimidating) way to begin is with the diffuser. If you’ve never smelled Peppermint and Thieves together you’re in for a treat! It’s one of my faves. Your house will smell wonderful and you can feel good about not putting harmful chemicals into the air!
Another important part to get familiar with is the lingo. This can be confusing but also very important when using oils.
EO – Essential Oil
Carrier Oil – the oil used to dilute the EO when applying it to the skin – this can be coconut oil, olive oil or any other oil you choose to use
Neat – using an EO without a carrier oil
Blend – multiple oils used together, can come together or made for a specific use
*Also oils should only be used in glass containers or stainless steel. You can get my favorite roller bottles HERE and spray bottles HERE.
Now onto the good part, my most used oils and blends! You’ll learn quickly what you like to use and when and come up with some of your own but for now here’s something to go on (passed on to me from my best oily girlfriends)!
Nighttime Foot Roller:
10 drops each and fill remainder with Fractionated Coconut Oil
Tea Tree, Thieves, RC, Peppermint, Lavender, Stress Away, Purification, Oregano, Rosemary, Frankencense
Soothing Throat Spray:
4 drops Thieves, 4 drops Lemon Oil, 2 drops Peppermint, 1 drop Oregano, 1/2 tsp Braggs Raw Apple Cider Vinegar, 1/2 tsp Raw Honey – fill remainder of the 2oz glass bottle with distilled or filtered water
Favorite Nighttime Diffuser:
2 drops Lavender, 2 drops Cedarwood, 2 drops Peace and Calming
Focus Blend:
I use this on Sophie everyday for school!
15 drops Cedarwood, 15 drops Lavender, 5 drops Vetiver (V is very potent so I only use a little!) – fill remainder roller bottle with Fractionated Coconut Oil. Use on wrists.
Splinters:
Thieves – that’s it! Crazy right?!? A drop or two will pop that little nagging splinter right out!
My Most Loved Oils:
Peppermint – I use Peppermint Every. Single. Day! I love putting it in my coffee and it works wonder on the tummy (dilute because this one can get “hot” on the skin)
Lavender – Again, we use this daily. SO many good benefits with this one and love bath time with Epsom Salt, Baking Soda and a few drops of Lavender!
Frankincense – I urge you to read up on this one, it’s good! Also can be used with your skincare regimen and works wonders!
Thieves – A MUST.
*If you are interested in getting started you can do that HERE! If you are interested in getting the most out of your Oil Membership and want to get discounted pricing (which is what I did!) you can sign up for that HERE. You don’t have to ever sell a single thing, but if you are going to order a started kit and think this oil journey might be for you, it will save you big time in the long run!
I’ll be sure to update this post when I find more blends that work well and if you try any of the ones listed above let me know how you like them! I would also love to hear about blends that you use! Comment below if you have a good one to share!
Thanks for stopping by!

What was the sleepy blend?
It was so long ago I can’t recall… if I figure out I’ll get back to you! Currently we are using the foot roller mentioned above and I swear I can’t keep my eyes open once I use it 😆😴 haha!
What do you recommend for Kids who Ikea getting colds on and off?
How about nighttime coughing on kids, RC on chest?
I like to use Oregano, Peppermint and Tea Tree on the chest with coconut oil. Also diffuser at night is essential! The throat spray is great too, killing bacteria with the vinegar etc.
Thanks for your reply!!!!! 😊
What a great post! I have always wanted to get into essential oils but like you said it was overwhelming and expensive. Your post is sooo helpful if I decide to take the plunge. In your opinion is Young Living or Doterra better? Would you go with Young Living again, hands down, if you were starting? Thxxx
Hi there! And yay, I’m so glad you found this post helpful! I started out with YL because that’s what my friends use who got me started. I think they used to be the same company so either one is perfectly fine. These two brands are the ONLY ones I would use that are therapeutic grade oils. I think a lot of their stuff is similar but each of them carry their own blends that they’ve created. I haven’t checked lately but I also think their pricing is similar, maybe YL is slightly cheaper but not totally sure.
